If you want your point to get across, you need to be upfront with what you want to say/express/ask full stop. You don't need to blunt, crude or belligerent, you just need to be honest with what you're trying to say. Arleen needs to just be straight with her lieutenant about her questions or intentions, otherwise she's not going to get far.
