EDIT: shading on this page is finished now. i ended up giving the palette about 5 extra colors just because some of the previous choices were awkward for the sake of an invisible minimalist goal (ex: the shadows in carmilla's ears).
wow. a really rough, second break from fresh meat and a rough landing. i have the next page about half sketched so far. this one, i'm deciding to upload as the flat colors for now. it's not my best work in any category, and that's mainly because this page is trying to trick the audience into thinking 6 people can sit at a cheap round table in a day room comfortably.
i guess this page could have not existed at all, and the story could have jumped directly to kim's next evaluation, but it felt like it'd be jarring pacing-wise. pacing is so fickle and still feels like more of an art than a science.
this page itself also allowed lupe to be introduced, and for introduction cycles that began with kim to kind of integrate her into their process to ease the sensation of "this is the protagonist" and build on the themes and tone.
originally, kerris was supposed to say an intro, but it felt fresher to have her completely glossed over by more extroverted characters while the camera lingers on her for a second. if i had all the energy in the world, i would have put 2 more panels at the end of this page to punctuate that fact by having the staff member here look at the paperwork on his clipboard and announce somebody's missing, only to have carmilla state that tabitha's missing.
