Claiming it is Dutch is not really correct as the Frisian region was only split between Germany and the Netherlands in 1815. Saying England is Dutch is not true, but the statement Dutch is Germanic is true. England or “Angleland” emerged an independent culture and language long before the Dutch culture and language split from Germanic culture and language Frisian’s, Angles and Saxons never referred to themselves as Germanic though - it was always a term imposed by the Romans, similar to how Aboriginal Australians never called themselves Aboriginal but it is now the umbrella term used to describe the indigenous tribes. And as these tribes ventured out of Germania into areas like Italy through the 6th century they just started identifying as German culture as that is what the local population knew it as

2025-06-11 10:53:03 +0000 UTCDamn can’t resist nerd bombing here Mislav is technically right there was a tribe, the Frisians, who lived in much of the modern Netherlands, who were among pagan tribes including the Angles, Saxons and Jutes mostly who colonised post-Roman Britain. So yeah sure England is Dutch. Hey what happened to the sad hang? Worth recounting?
