I swear I've been saying what Ali is saying about housing bubble crash since I was 15 and learnt about economics for the first time...
if all the money is pumped into a non-productive asset/investment it will get to a point where people will need to access that money to actually do something productive with it, causing the prices to reverse and there's nothing to hold it back like cash flow from sales or selling the asset to someone else, but if there's nothing to be generated from the asset, no one's going to invest or buy into something that's going backwards...it's very simple economics of supply and demand, If the demand is choked so hard that demand basically disappears (no one under 35 is going to be able to buy a house at these prices, or if they have one will start defaulting on their debt that has increased 20% in 2 years) then prices can only do one thing

There's nothing inherently wrong with nuclear energy, it's just wrong for Australia when we have one of the largest land masses in the world, unable to be habitated by humans or animals, that receives more sun in a day than some European countries will over an entire year, same goes for wind in this country...with so much room and free energy we'd be stupid to 1. Not use it and use the excess to create green hydrogen to sell to other countries (there goes the mining industries argument) and 2. Build nuclear reactors, that need to be near the ocean (where 98% of the people in this country live) for cooling water, require extensive infrastructure and skills to build and operate, will take 20 years to build, it goes on.. there's just so many reasons to not use it when compared to free energy that's coming from the sun anyway

Thanks for the rec! Even in Australia with so much sun & wind, I worry the energy output will literally be orders of magnitude less than what we need. Hence, I worry the world will need *almost exclusively* nuclear. Alternative energy will keep improving but surely thereโs a limit to alternatives that is much lower than fossil/coal/nuclear. I really hope Iโm wrong!

My favourite thing lately when discussing this nuclear issue with people I know is that they'll usually say something like "This science YouTuber has a video explaining why new reactors are cheap and safe!". Then I ask them who the YouTuber was, look them up and find that they're a consultant for the nuclear lobby. Every single time. Kind of insane how people will just accept facts from random strangers on the internet without doing at least like 5 minutes of research on them.

Also, I recommend listening to people like Saul Griffith (he has a couple of books on this) who advocate and work on this issue

Yeah nuclear has it's place in global energy supply. But the problem with nuclear for Australia is that reactors haven't even begun to be built, and are always more time-consuming and expensive than planned, but the libs want to pretend like it'll get us to net zero by 2050. They don't even want to put out their plan for it before the next election (because it's not actually feasible). Imo it's just a ploy to delay shutting down fossil fuels. We actually have plenty of opportunities with renewables in Australia if we just invest in it.

Jordan thereโs a pro-nuclear argument that Iโd love for you to dissect: If we donโt sustain our current living standards, then the world will see famine & war that would make even Genghis Khan cry. Apparently there are already major threats to the global food & fertilizer supply, among other shortages. Iโd love to see wind & solar carry the weight, but apparently, the energy they produce is barely a fraction of what we get from coal & nuclear, so they canโt sustain current living standards and thus canโt stave off global catastrophe.
Nuclear poses major threats, as youโve described. But what if no-nuclear makes us even worse off?
P.S. X Files is fucking sick. The movies were good too

Apparently Barnaby Joyce played a part in Assange's release (according to this ABC article about it). What a king lol.
