The histories of communism and capitalism are almost impossible to compare IMO. Russia and China were effectively in the dark ages because of Tsarist failures/repression, backwards Chinese customs (e.g., foot-binding literally half your population at birth; child brides, etc) and China’s “century of humiliation” from foreign nations. Plus existentialist threats from a vastly superior Germany/Japan. I think the lessons of the 20th century aren’t “avoid extremist ideology” or “communism doesn’t work”, but rather, don’t let major nations lag too far behind the rest of the world, or else they’ll feel compelled to play a do-or-die form of catch-up.

2023-05-15 12:38:21 +0000 UTCNo I’m not saying that but now that you mention it let’s do the math. Approximately 45 million dead from Mao Zedong’s Great Leap Forward and an estimated 120 million dead during the communist Russia period. That’s 165 million dead as a direct cause of communism. How does capitalism compare?

2023-05-13 23:29:46 +0000 UTCYoure saying that as if capitalism didn't, directly and indirectly, cause millions of deaths in the developing worlds and thousands of avoidable deaths in the "developed" worlds.

2023-05-13 16:45:24 +0000 UTCtotally agree, but I really liked how they had someone whose opinion I don't agree with in the slightest was on the pod. Was a healthy discussion and loved this change of pace on the pod.

2023-05-12 08:15:52 +0000 UTCWas interesting hearing the perspectives. However I’m not sure how anyone with even a shallow historical understanding of the 20th century can think Marxism/ communism is a viable option. Yeah sure Russia went from feudalism to space age in 60 years but look what it cost. Millions of people dead all under the guise of ‘this is what the people want’. Seems a little conflicted

2023-05-12 02:07:44 +0000 UTCFriendly jordies is right, royal family is a gigantic net financial benefit for England. But this is the country that voted for brexit so don’t think the royals will be around much longer. Problem is the royals would actually be richer if they stopped being royal.

2023-05-11 23:03:23 +0000 UTCI really prefer the more non-political pods the boys do because they're a lot more relatable and engaging. I do enjoy the political chat when it's about current policies and stuff that's actually relevant to us today. But the episodes like this one where they delve into big-picture philosophical politics that we have little to no prerogative over tend to be a bit of a miss. However, I still enjoyed this episode and thought the guest had some refreshing insights.

2023-05-11 11:52:02 +0000 UTCthe thing about AI is that it uses the cheap labour from the global south to do data labelling (which regulates what’s meant to pop up) which means the workers gets exposed to rly fcked up shit. Look up Kenyan AI workers

2023-05-11 01:57:25 +0000 UTC"Political" is a broad stroke though mate. I think if you're into this specific kind of political chat this might have been engaging but if you're not then it's an absolute drag. Philosophical chats can be engaging but this one was a miss for me, unlike the vast majority of Jordies content.

2023-05-11 00:34:17 +0000 UTCDo you forgot that jordies is a political channel? Maybe because I've already gone deep into the thoughts about this in trying to understand it, but knowing and understanding this stuff is important to move away from Capitolism or at least soften it up.

2023-05-10 23:18:35 +0000 UTCJesus Christ boys can you please keep the microphones closer to your faces when you talk? Have to keep adjusting the volume every time a different lad speaks.

2023-05-10 23:17:08 +0000 UTCWhen I started listening in 2018 I went back as far as my podcast app let me, even got a few of the radio shows. I can honestly say that this was by far the worst pod of the entire catalogue. Not a trend or anything, you guys have been hot lately - keep up the good work and keep the weirdos off the pod.
