High And Mighty (Up-Late)

High And Mighty (Up-Late)

Comments

As well as worth noting that the consultancy groups that have held discussions with us have advocated for ‘changing the date’ not abolish - also the vibe over in WA was fucking harsh for the day - may have been because local governments didn’t want to spend money with their elections coming up but Aus day celebrations were cut by like $10-15 million throughout the state from just last year (about 80% of the total spendings) which really made it feel dead

Harry

Hey lads great conversation as usual - just on Aus day - I used to think it was just a ‘vibe’ thing as well. On discussion with a local elder I discovered that Indigenous groups have held the 26 of January as a day of mourning since 1938 (only roughly 50 years before the public holiday was announced…)

Harry

Great discussion, boys. It was nice to hear new information about the court case and have a refresher that brought together all the other threads in play in one place. Your conversation also made me think of a legislative proposal put forth by the European Commission in May last year (specifically 2022/0155(COD)) that aims to achieve similarly sophisticated and even more encompassing surveillance of platform users in the name of combatting child sexual abuse material (CSAM). While we all support combatting this crime, essentially, the proposal wants to implement client-side scanning tools on European devices that will scan devices for known CSAM materials and monitor messages for 'grooming' language. These tools are notoriously ineffective and prone to error too. Additionally, the proposal seeks to establish an ill-defined body that will compel platform providers (messenger, WhatsApp etc.) to monitor their users in order to combat CSAM, and these providers will face huge fines if they don't see a percentage reduction. The language around this body is vague, but the natural consequence of its existence and the passing of this proposal will be a surveillance state that possibly outstrips the US (though their methods are more nuanced) and rivals China. Thankfully, there are a few Members of the European Parliament who are against this proposal, and it may not even pass the courts given the potential violations of fundamental European rights. However, similar to Jordan's experience with 'racism', anyone who questions this proposal is accused of not wanting to protect children/sympathising with pedophiles etc. The media discourse surrounding this isn't as bad as it was in Britain with a similar proposal or with Jordan's case, but it exists nevertheless and serves to discredit and control any opposition to mass surveillance.

Hey boiz how ya going? I wanna get this through to jimmys if possible. I think with the upcoming state election it's worth revsisting the brumby issue in the Kosciuszko national park. Their population was surveyed again and it's up 40%. Im living in Jindabyne the amount of "treechangers" down here is impressive. There's a paradigm shift from old rusted on nats voters to new Environmentally conscious voters and a new video highlighting the hypocrisy under the current liberal govt that allegedly wants to campaign on environmental Issues would do a heap of good.

Bonglord69

I'm sure some will call to cancel it all together instead, but it would only be a small minority in comparison.

Jason Gavriel

Completely agree with that comment Jason. I do think that hardcore Lydia Thorpe faction of the Greens party will forever protest no matter what the date is.

I've brought this up with people from both sides (and neutral) on the aus day issues and they almost always agree. I know y'all love the monarchy, but if we become a Republic and make that Australia day (aus 26th can be kept as a public holiday for remembering the history if it's more agreeable), it's a solution that appeases the change the day apologists and the nationalists. It's the cleanest solution by far imo and the only way forward and brings us together rather than the stalemate we have right now.

Make Mis go to a 2nd-year engineering thermodynamics unit for a semester and see if he learns anything

Alexander Freeman

Flume has made a hottest 100-worthy song (see 2016). Prior to today I never heard "Say Nothing", and I'm from WA. I stopped caring about Triple-J ages ago, the only people who listen are products of private-school education in the western suburbs.

Alexander Freeman

Already got a ticket for the show in Melbourne. Can't wait.

Alex Isaac

In this case, it's got no substance. Also mislav is a guitar musician, electronic music is creative sure, but doesn't mean it's any good musically . But the general public don't analyse music or words.

Alex Isaac

Make Mislav go the most dodgy shisha bar you can find. I want to hear all of his 2016 Gavin Mcinnes thoughts again for the meme

Jacob Long

MisAdventure Asian gaming lounge. World of Warcraft and LOL sweats everywhere. Comedy golf Lots to write about Can order food service while sitting at a computer too, so maybe he will be content with it

Matt

Mislav is so right about stealing shit from Woolies and Coles. The dogs make so much money, they can absolutely deal with me pinching matchbox cars from the kids section from them. Kids steal them anyways. so what difference am I making to their billions of profit 😎🥸 #fortnite #jordanboughtsilverintheGFCsosilly #qantasstocks

Matt

"Soundd like something playing at cottonon" Glad I'm not the only one who recognised this genre of music.

Alex Richardson

Misadventures should have him go to a uni like UNSW and sit in a random lecture room and take notes in his notepad like he is a student

Templar

Good pod this one tho, hahaha

Daniel Greblo

I think you guys need to add a bit more detail to your music critiques, like I'm not a mega Flume fan or anything, but on the whole, whenever disucussing music, the conversation generally seems to stray a lot into "this music is popular so it's shit." I don't care if you don't like it, but can you at least tell us why?

Daniel Greblo

My understanding of Australia Day, is that it's only been a public holiday since 1994. It's been protested as invasion day since the 70s by the Blak community. It's not just the fringes or woke people I think.

Alex Isaac

Chuck it to an open format plebiscite, laugh profusely when we change Australia Day to May 8. Place your trust in Australian larrikinism.

George

I assume you’ve already studied the career of Brandon Sanderson?

George

Misadventure suggestions 1. 2nd div Footy games. 2. Super smash Brothers tournament 3. Games workshop 4. Anime convention 5. Wax museum 6. Jewish history museum Mislav research assignments: history of speed running a particular game. Maybe Mario 64 or dark souls.

Alex Magga

Perfect subject for Mislav, a musicological study of Flume’s effect on Pop Music, so he can finally understand why he’ll never be a megastar without adding a synth player to his band.

George

Look I love getting blackout drunk and having a BBQ as much as anyone. However my sister pointed out that we could just have a moments silence for the horrendous shit that went on. Since a quarter of my ancestors running down my maternal side literally dyed below 40 for being aboriginal (first in WW1 and then next gen refused from hospitals while in dire need). I think that makes sense just a bit of respect.

Jordan Ashcroft

the problem with celebrating the day of australia's federation is that it was the 1st of january, which is already a more significant worldwide holiday. this might be a surprise but as a patron of the friendlyjordies podcast, i think jordan hit the nail on the head about australia day when he made those videos that vice got mad at.

harpseal2

Question for the up-late crew. Quitting my 9-5 government job to focus on full time science fiction and fantasy writing. One book published, one ready to go, 4 more kicking around upstairs (possibly 5, want to write a bio on Jordan's rise and taking on Barilaro and others, including the court case - then submit it to the Walkleys haha). Any advice on building a Patreon following and regular income? It'd be around teaching writing and showing early book drafts. I still have a job as a combat engineer in the Reserves but it's not enough to live off. I already have a TikTok following of around 60k and a couple hundred YouTube followers. Cheers for reading this comrades and love your work - Bryn (pronounced Brin)
