My mother was a nurse/midwife for 40 years and has always said the private health system is a scam. If a birth has complications in the private system they often have to take the woman to the public hospital because it has all the specialist and better equipment. The public system isn't trying to save costs by keeping old equipment. My wife had our daughter in a public hospital and it was great (as much as labour can be). The nurses and doctors were great and provide us with a lot of options and painkillers for my wife. We even had our own room but I think we were just lucky in that respect. We would never go private, no matter how much money we had because if a birth doesn't go well, a public hospital doesn't care about cost, only keeping mum and baby alive and safe. After all, we forget in the Western world but childbirth can be a very dangerous game.
