I think it’s important to note that the libs after the federal election (plus SA and WA) had a review - the overwhelming idea coming from these reviews was to shift more right - the hardcore right who control the party have start shitting themselves and have consolidated even more power. I don’t see this trend changing within the next 5 years tbh - it’s become so bad that over in WA - the members at their state conference passed a motion thanking all their senators except Dean Smith (the member who created gay marriage) the discontent within their party against anyone even slightly towards the centre has become fucking extreme and the liberal party as an institute seems to be reinforcing this.

firstly, i'm glad to see you guys back so soon, especially since i would have found it more than justified to stay off of socials for a while. thanks so much for keeping the pod going in these hard times, you're a bunch of legends. EDIT: forgot to say that i'm sorry to hear about your loss, mislav. i hope you're doing okay big man. on your point about it being too soon to tell whether the US will succeed or not, well i have the historians perspective and i think theres some context not being elaborated on here. the US was powerful but it wasnt as powerful as the continental european powers, the UK, or maybe even early imperial japan, until WWI where the US did engage in enterprising behaviour by selling shit to either side, thats fair, but they also didn't get involved in the war until the end and they didnt do much of anything while the rest of the major powers lost a lot in fighting. this was compounded in WWII obviously where the US did slightly more but the only real losses they took was one military base in hawaii while britain, germany, france, japan, etc. were all burning heaps. they came out on top because the other idiots burned each other to the ground, so its basically dumb luck rather than intelligent decision-making. now that china is an actual threat i think that we'll see in our lifetimes that the US is not sustainable, the system is too slow to react to change while the chinese system can turn on a dime in response to external factors. the only reason the US has done so well is because they don't need to rapidly change because they've gotten to be a bystander in the two worst conflicts the world has seen and every other military endeavour they've taken has been against developing countries where they dont need to expend much of their resources to fight
