FYI, I think the “One China Policy” was explained incorrectly on the pod. My understanding is that countries that have a “One China policy” do so simply because they resolve that there is one China only (I.e. that Taiwan is not an independent state), however they leave ambiguous as to which China that is (it could be Taiwan/KMT, or Mainland/CCP). The Chinese civil war never ended, it suits all parties to have this policy as the Taiwanese/KMT still see mainland China as theirs (they fled to Taiwan with the aim of taking the mainland back), and mainland China/CCP still sees Taiwan as theirs (just a rogue prefecture). So eventually reunification will happen, it’s just not decided who will unify into what. USA/Australia/etc would be dropping their one China policy if they recognized Taiwan as an independent state. Things are more complicated now that Taiwan is a democracy.
