The Venetian Doge re-directed the armies and lead the sack of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade following centuries of bitterness between the Eastern (Byzantines) and Western Christian (Venice, HRE, Rome) powers, and then more specifically the imperial rivalry between Constantinople which looked down on the merchant class vs the more proto-capitalist merchant republic of Venice.
Jordies argues that after the sack (2 centuries before the actual Fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans) Venetian influence was able to take take root throughout central, southern and western Europe through its wealth and influence over Rome. He claims that Capitalism and Enlightenment values come from that Venetian influence that goes all the way back to the Fourth Crusade.
tl;dr - leading up to the sack of Constantinople, the Byzantines were "For the state", while Venice were "For the gold". Venice backstabbed the Byzantines despite being Christian allies, sacked their capital and made bank stripping the city of its art and wealth to sell it off. The Venetian ideology then shaped the last 600 years of mainstream European ideology leading up to today.

For the House of Representatives, place 1 for The Greens.
For the Senate, place 1 for Victorian Socialists; otherwise, place 1 for The Greens, if you are outside Victoria.
