We have tall-poppy syndrome, convict/jailer heritage, an underdog identity/ethos, if a celeb goes 5 mins without self-deprecating then we hate them; etc. These are mostly good things IMO … but yeah the downside is we celebrate songs with 3 chords; mullets and gross mo’s; bland beer; mismatching outfits; disheveled clothes that don’t fit; etc. I think a large portion of us WANT to look drab because the Australian mentality allows it to be a “style”. (Don’t get me wrong, a lot of people around me where I now live tend to dress worse … but dat’s called “poverty” 😬 lol)
