This week the randomizer goes all the way back to late 2021 to cover Disney Animation's latest instant massive phenomenon that took the world by storm with breathtaking visuals, compelling characters, dynamic storytelling and inhumanly catchy songs...and just our luck, one of our guests on this episode just so happens to be one of the nine people in the universe who intensely despises it with a burning intensity. Yeeeeaaaah, this one got a little contentious. Join Tony Goldmark, Madeline Maye, Renie Rivas and Luke Ski as they vigorously debate the merits of ENCANTO!

So...this is definitely a contentious one. I can tell that Madeline is speaking from a lot of personal experience and in the interest of not suggesting that this is invalid, I'm... just gonna say that I disagree with her take and leave it at that. Still, kinda sucks that this one element made everyone else walk on eggshells for most of the review.

2022-04-26 00:55:20 +0000 UTCThis is coming from a position of privilege (healthy relationship w/ immediate family): Do I hope we get an animated feature someday soon where getting away from the toxic family environment (maybe even telling them off) IS the happy ending? Absolutely, because not every family can reconcile. Those who sufferred and escaped that trauma deserve catharsis in media. However, I'm not going to hold it against Encanto for not being that movie. In fact, given how rare it would be for the family Abuela to admit she's wrong (so I've heard), I can see this being a comfort or even hope for those making effort for their own family they see as worth healing (within reason). If nothing else, maybe that can encourage more instances like it in real life where proper reflection occurs and a family can be healthier and more loving than they've ever been before. Again, I recognize that's not always possible, and the misfits deserve their animated cinematic milestone to help normalize personal health in that situation, but I would like to see genuine reconciliation wherever possible. If this movie does that, it's a plus.
