Here's some progress on my 2nd competitive costume.
I spent pretty long time pondering over what material would be best to make her butterflies out of.
I really wanted to make them look gorgeous and shiny.
I first decided to use Swarowski stones but I couldn't find the size I needed..then I wanted to make them out of resin. I felt that something was missing and none of these ideas were satisfying me, so I ditched the butterfly aspect for a few days and focused on making other stuff.
Surprisingly, when I took a break and scrolled my fb news feed, a super creative post popped out of nowhere. This one sculptor, that was recycling old CDs and was making outstanding sculptures inspired me to make my butterflies out of the same material.
How I made them:
1. You will need several old CDs and a permanent marker
2. Line over your stencil, and keep the silhouettes as clean as possible
3. Boil some water and leave all of you CDs in it for 10 minutes
4. Take one of them, dry any water left on its surface and cut with a regular pair of scissors a small area
5. You need to separate the plastic cover from the film. Find the edge (use the cut you made) and slowly remove it.
6. I used nail scissors for fine detail cutting.
It felt extremely good when I recycled my old highschool Chemistry projects 🤭
I will add more details and color to the wings when I finish cutting all 34 pieces.
