One of my gay BFFs texted me saying: "I wanted to make a gay joke but my parents already did." This, of course, got an applause from me and I would like to applaud all the beautiful queers in this coven for being yourselves. I'm so thankful you're here and may your life be full of blessings and rainbows, but not the rainbows that get photoshopped into some late-stage capitalistic brand during the month of June.
Speaking of, we made it through our first month without DJ Bruja Radio. I know we all miss it, but you still deal with my bullshit on a weekly basis and the show is making a short comeback...
DJ Bruja Radio 🎧
The PRIDE party is coming! Make sure to save the date for my DJ set on Mixcloud happening Tuesday June 18th 🏳️🌈
Coven Events & Patreon Things 💃
After watching The Shame of You... I mean, The Idea of You, I feel like I should force y'all to watch Interview with the Vampire for our watchalongs this month. I'm feeling something horror, so will discuss with the High Priestesses. In the meantime, here are some fun happenings:
30 Day Horny Challenge 🍆 🍑 We've done music, movie, and TV challenges, so in honor of gayness, let's honor the miracle of the human body and the beauty of attraction, as we allow nature to take over and thirst after some hotties together 🥵
Our Listening Party is happening tonight! What songs make you feel unexplainable, melancholic longing? Please add 3 of 4 your favorite yearning songs to our playlist 🎵
The Presidential Debate is coming, which is sure to be a complete shit-show, so let's get through it together, cry, and laugh with good company on Discord. Do it for the memes, for most Americans who are actually cool, and for me who will not be sober 🇺🇸
New Music & Remixes have been occurring as promised, including my attempt to honor the great music in both Suspiria movies. Another original song is coming soon, as is the May Vlog. If you're not able to upgrade tiers, remember my special Patreon Offer: refer a friend to join our coven & you'll be upgraded a level for an entire month! Billie Eilish’s New Album Review
Is she hitting us both hard and soft? Our High Priestess, Sam, called this the album of the year. Since many albums now sound like a playlist meant for TikTok videos, I'm always thankful the rare times a mainstream artist comes through with actual art and an album that feels like a cohesive project. I wasn't as big of a fan of Billie's previous album vs her debut, so as she continues to reinvent herself while going back to some of her roots, she made me happier than ever. If you wanna get super nerdy about it, here's my track-by-track review:
1. Skinny - Billie's unique, gentle, honey-like voice combined with a beautiful string arrangement by Beck's dad, David Campbell. Yes, they're scientologists. But still, good intro.
2. Lunch - Is this the song of the summer? Because it's already on all the sapphic playlists. It doesn't just have a catchy beat or references girls dancing on Billie's tongue, but "I bought you somethin' rare and I left it under 'Claire'" makes me really happy and jealous for women who are into women.
3. Chihiro - My favorite song on the album, and it's not just because I love Miyazaki's Spirited Away. The song is a throwback to the early sounds of Bellyache but with big, moodier synths, and it really showcases how good Billie and Finneas are at dynamics, polyphony, and her goddamn amazing falsetto.
4. Birds of a Feather - A Korean drama in the making and the most radio-friendly of them all. My friends love this song. As the contrarian that I am, I usually skip it.
5. Wildflower - For the emos and the yearners.
6. The Greatest - Beautiful song reminiscent of the song structures in Happier Than Ever. That awesome interlude makes me think she should do a shoegaze album. Only Billie can make "all the times I waited for you to want me naked" sound sweet.
7. L'Amour de Ma Vie - Always love her lower register, even though the production is thin... up until it completely mutates into an awesome EDM beat you could blast at the barcade while you lose at Donkey Kong.
8. The Diner - Is this a stalker song? Billie can totally eat me for lunch, but I don't want to be anyone's wife. Apparently, if you text the phone number she whispers in the outro, you get the repeated texts saying “it’s billie, call me.”
9. Bittersuite - Night drive low synth and a reverberating bass. Si. Excelente. Muchas gracias.
10. Blue - Yes, I cried during the song about a damaged childhood. Not during the initial hooky pop tune, but when it turns into a completely different theme about brokenness. "You were born bluer than a butterfly, beautiful and so deprived of oxygen... You were born reaching for your mother's hands." Way to get my inner child to come out with a knife. Fortunately and unfortunately, Finneas voice snaps us back to reality making this last tune feel a bit disjointed or carrying too many ideas. I do wish it was a couple of different tracks, but it still ends with my favorite string arrangement in the entire album. And makes me think that we can't change each other, but maybe we can save each other through compassion.
According to the stars, the world may continue to feel overwhelming, and with way too much information constantly being thrown at us, we need to narrow our energy and strengthen our spirit. They say big news and possible discoveries are coming, so since we tend to be overloaded and desensitized, we need to ground ourselves. So move your body, do your breathwork, put those bare feet on the grass, hug a fucking tree, and above all, avoid media polarization. Do not let anyone mess with your peace!
Thanks so much for being here, as I would not be here without you. I hope May brought you some flowers and may we bloom during the June gloom ❤️
