Sorry for late reply, but from my FAQ: Have you read the People’s Republic of Wal-Mart? Yes, I’ve read that book. It is a good defence of planning in general, including an exposition of how it currently takes place in large corporations. It does not quite do the work that many people seem to think it does in rehabilitating central planning, though. People play fast and loose with the word ‘planning’ and they meme with the name of the book, but central planning is still bad (sorry). There is no well-defined ‘economic problem’ for the whole economy that can be solved, and to define it is necessarily to abstract from some things and impose a particular vision of the world on everybody. In addition, the authors of the book do not give sufficient consideration to the role of demand and profit/loss signals in disciplining even large corporations, for better or for worse. However, I do not believe that the authors truly want central planning. I see the primary contribution of the book as methodological, showing up fables about decentralised markets economies.

Nice and nuanced take. Unfortunately I am one of those pesky leftists that kinda still thinks a planned economy could work, so I'm compelled to ask, what's your opinion on the book "the people's republic of Walmart"?

Cristiander

Try the Varoufakis book!

I've been sharing and discussing this video. I love the thought that surplus is essential to economics How could I read up more on that different take?
