Love Anime, Hate weebs & their obsession with Japanese culture

GTO!!! Holy shit! I thought I was the only one who knew/loved that show/manga I learned so much about life from Onizuka! And man, I felt the same about weebs too, I loved anime but not to the extent that some do... there is a Japanese grocery store in my town that has a small bookstore inside and they are always congregated there, and it's just odd to see cosplayers/lolita's everywhere... at a grocery store... And I just recently started to feel the same about consoles and the gaming market, that industry like nearly every other entertainment industry is so corrupt now I've checked out on being hyped for anything anymore...

I'm a casual anime fan so I out grew the whole weeb thing and some people might love it some might have it as a hobby. In the end just matters if you grow up mentally or not

GTO is the absolute best !

I'd love a more in depth discussion, especially about how media effects our perceptions of reality and ourselves

As a reformed Weeb who spend a decade in Japan, after about a year the shine comes off the turd and it becomes like every where else with it's own problems and issues. It's a xenophobic patriarchal monoculture where you'll never be truly accepted, and your status in society as a foreigner is tied to where you come from, the color of your skin, and your job. That said the quality of life can be excellent, once you get accustomed to it's quirks. The vision of Japan a weeb has compared to the reality is vastly different. A two week vacation won't expose anyone to real life. Especially not while you're busy looking for waifus in Akiba.

Yes. Please lol. I’m a big anime fan myself, only read a couple mangas but I find myself feeling the same way. There can be a level of appreciation that doesn’t need to veer into cringe inducing obsession
