How Hard Is It To Gain Power on an N/A Engine? BMW E46 330i - Project Cologne: PT16

Direct Link - https://youtu.be/2hr4AyiaFhY

The longest-running project on the channel continues: project Cologne!

I've been working on the E46 this past summer, in between other projects, so this is the summer of that work. I'm not gonna spoil the results, but I am really happy with the progress of this car!

I'm having so much fun with it on the Nurburgring. I was sorta unsure in the beginning about turning this it into a track tool, but I can confidently say I have no regrets. It's the most fun car to drive fast in the fleet.

The next episode should be on the E31, project Marseille. Quiet a lot to do there, but I'm hoping to have the engine running in that one. Thank you and hope you enjoy the episode!

I think it may be normal. I had the exact same issue with some knocking in my 166,000 mile M62 and bought a brand new oil filter housing and was exactly the same takes a moment for oil pressure to build up. I have had 4 BMWs with these motors and they all seem to do that even a very low milage 2001 X5 I got when it was 3 years old. Though my S64 does seem to build pressure much faster....

Speaking of M54's and oil filter housings... does anyone here know how to definitively confirm that the check valve in your oil filter housing is functioning properly? Exactly how quickly should the red oil light go off from a cold start? (2001/low cluster if it matters). I've looked up videos of M54 cold starts to try to see how other cars behave to compare, but it's tough because for all you know, the cars you're seeing are also >20 years old and their check valves could be bad too. It seems like a lesser known thing most owners are unlikely to address. Streten's comment about prefilling the oil filter housing got me thinking about this. For my M54 on a cold start, from the instant I hear any motor/starter engagement noise, it's ~2.2 seconds until the red oil light pops off. (Does that seem proper / is there a more scientific way to confirm besides timing the light?)

I heard you should use driving gloves with alcantara steering wheels. That way they don't get dirty. Maybe something to think about since you're going to the track with the car anyway :)
