As someone who read the source material yes he 100% planned to kill Kim. (just less time to explain every small detail in the anime and make the fights look cool lol) The first fireball was meant to shake and wake him up and notice how the sword that was behind Jin Woo magically was next to Kim when he woke up? Jin Woo needed a tank and a rank A tank is the best he can get without killing an S-rank.

The earliest signs I saw of Jin-woo having any inclination to kill Kim was once he confirmed that Kim wanted to kill him(charging at Jin-woo while he was fighting). Unless I completely missed it earlier. Also i realised I mis typed in the initial post.

But since Kim came at Jinwoo with the intent to murder and Jinwoo killed him instead, then it's self-defense because he technically defended himself even though it's clear to us the audience that he planned that from the start which would make it premeditated murder instead of self-defense if you could prove that in court.
