Here's my take on it: I think the like the "father" said, the truth punishes the people who come in contact with him, by taking away their true desire. This depends on the person. So it is not knowledge for everyone, just in this case for the father and Hohenheim, as the homunculus was born of hohenheims blood. Edward boasts about how he is the youngest state alchemist and everything else just before he comes to the realization how to save his brother. This indicates prideful behavior for his alchemy knowledge, and makes it a good sacrifice for the truth. He is giving up his pride. This is also why Edward and Selim were always on spotlight at the same time, they are mirroring each other. Another proof for this is the cardinal sin focus of the anime. Everyone has to abandon their most abundant cardinal sin to "beat" the truth. Van hohenheim's and father's sin was greed, both had a greed for family and father went even further to greed for knowledge. That's why Greed the character was so rebellious, because the fathers greed was so enormous. I need to stop rambling, I liked your theory too. I hope you guys watch the last episode too.

One interesting thing you probably missed out is the Dwarf's door. You mentioned about the gates' being different for each person. In the confrontation of the Dwarf with Truth, we can see the Dwarf's door. Just a blank slate of nothingness. Just like what Truth said, the Dwarf just kept on stealing from others, never had any belief for himself, and because of that, he had no personal growth. Totally different from Ed's and Al's doors.
