So this is how I interpret this movie - When the father refuses to follow the churches rules in the beginning and is banished, he commits the sin of Pride. He continues to commit this sin throughout the movie (by not returning and asking forgiveness). Because of this, the “Devil” is invited into the home (aka the goat). Throughout the film, various family members commit different sins and also die for their sins. The main girl then loses all hope and can only find comfort in the devil and what he offers. This is what the “Devil” intended.
Basically, it’s supposed to represent how destructive religion can be on a person and on a family. It should also be noted that the fungus on the corn they are constantly eating causes hallucinations and disordered thoughts.
