This was an EPIC history lesson. I wish this is how my history classes were taught! Watch along with your own copy and enjoy!

We watched this one on Netflix

I also love looking back at this episode in a post Korra world because Toph and Katara are Korra's friends or at least mentors as well so we see once again these friendships transcending lifetimes.

This also means, of course, that Azula is also descended from both Roku and Sozin

the bombshell that zuko is a descendant of BOTH of them was ...my jaw has to be picked up off the floor. But, I get it, his struggle within. and it only get crazier from here, buckle up, there is chaos ahead, but this is why it's one of the classics

I absolutely loved this episode! It's one of my favorites from the whole show. I think it was great getting the full backstory to the start of the war and really understanding the situation. We get to see that Roku might have been able to prevent the war if he had dealt with Sozin differently. I agree with the idea that if Aang didn't run away, he probably wouldn't have survived. The entire Fire Nation invading the four air temples with the power of the comet and Aang not having learned any element except for air, I think he would have died. It was also nice get a look at Sozin's mindset. He really did just seem like he wanted to take over the world, but I do think even to the end his friendship with Roku was important to him, just not as important as taking over the world. When the volcano erupted on Roku's island, his first instinct was to go and help his friend. Once Roku was hit with the volcanic gas, I think he realized that Roku dying would help him expand the Fire Nation and so decided to leave him behind.

I just love how the show tells it's stories and in such a short time without feeling something would be missing so many newer shows and especially movies should learn from that

I was so excited for you to see this one. It is absolutely one of my favs, it is like a master-class in writing flashbacks in a relevant, well-constructed way and how to use them to further the story and the characters. This is also amazing considering it's like a mirror-episode for "The Storm" (1x12). Once again we get the backstory of an Avatar and a member of the Fire Nation's royal family, but this time, they are connected and they bring context to Zuko and Aang and their relationship. Also, that moment when Roku says "some friendships are so strong, they can even transcend lifetimes" always, always brings tears to my eyes. It is perfect and whoever wrote it, is a genius.
