I wouldn't be worried/offended about this episode depicting Japanese culture as brain-washy as I think this episode portrayed the fire nation in a pretty good light.
We get to see them as (mostly) normal kids who are just very sheltered & taught in a more strict way instead of just making them all out to be Azula copycats.
While the Fire Nation dose have a lot of clear Japanese influences it dosn't nessarly mean that everything about them is supposed to have a direct connection to Japanese culture. For example the pledge the kids recite during class is similar to what a lot of American kids are taught (or so I've been told), the big pictures of thier leader everywhere is something that happens a lot in North Korea & teaching false history is common in most countries that are going through a war that they started, as a way to indoctronate the youth.
As for tradition I think Aang being there actually enforces the great side of tradition as he was teaching them about what thier culture was actually like before the war when kids could express themselves more freely, so clearly there was a time when things in the fire nation weren't so militaristic & the 100 years of war ruined that.
Also incase you haven't seen it the whole secret dance party plotline is seen as a kind of a parady of the movie Footloose by fans.
Azula is so awkward, always ruining her brother's chill time in the worst way possible, just let him be alone with he's emo gf for five minutes lol.
Yes, Idk what it is but everyone in this show looks so good in red (Azula & Zuko did look cute in thier Earth kingdom outfits but the fire nation style still tops them).
