2023-01-01 02:06:12 +0000 UTCI'm sure someone has pointed this out - but Elliott was played by Henry Thomas, who you've seen as the young dad in Haunting of Hill House and uncle Henry in Haunting of Bly Manor (he's also in Midnight Mass as :*surprise*: the father lol). Looking forward to watching this - it's been quite a few years since I last saw it!

Then over the years, for whatever reason, I'd gotten it in my head that the reason it was so beloved by audiences at the time was partly because "summer blockbusters" were still a relatively fresh concept. Basically, I'd convinced myself that the movie wasn't as well done as I originally thought it was. But then literally about a month ago, I rewatched it for the first time in decades. And I realized, nope, it's actually a masterpiece, and deserved all the love it got when it came out. Spielberg has never been more assured in how he moved the camera. All the sequences when E.T. is first entering Elliot's bedroom, and the way characters and constantly moving in and out of frame - you can tell where people like Shyamalan drew so much inspiration. And the entire portion when Elliot is in school with the frogs, and E.T. is at home drinking beer and watching TV - with the movie very subtly revealing their psychic bond - it's honestly one of the best sequences Spielberg has ever done. Poetic and subtle and cinematic, and conveyed almost entirely through visuals and music.
