Appa is also Aang's spirit guide (like how Roku, the previous Avatar, had a dragon) which probably not only makes thier bond extremely strong but also different from the usual type of owner/pet dynamic.

Some people don't understand why Aang is lashing out so much on first watch but I see it as a crucial part of his character arc.
