2022-06-01 22:20:08 +0000 UTCI’m late but I have some info so I’ll post it anyway. I felt the same way about the horse of a different color as a kid. I think they used two or three different horses, but what I do remember is that they dyed them with gelatin. This was around the time that animal protection acts were passed for films so they had someone on set making sure that nothing harmful was done to the animals. I guess gelatin was the only non toxic way they could get such bright colors. This meant that they had to shoot those shots pretty quickly because the horses would start licking the gelatin off shortly after it was put on. It’s weird to think that in a lot of ways the animals were treated better than the humans. People have already talked about Judy so I won’t go into that, you're right about the tin man paint being toxic, and I’m pretty sure Todo got paid more than the munchkins. The effect with the witch teleporting was actually pretty dangerous and during the filming of the first time she does it Margaret Hamilton got pretty badly burned. This film kind of reminds me of It’s a Wonderful life in that it wasn’t super popular when it came out but because it ended up being shown on TV every year it became sort of inescapable. It was super expensive and up to 1000 costumes were produced and saved until they were eventually all auctioned off in the 70’s. The Lion costume is made of real lion fur.
