I highly recommend that you guys read the book. So the book was written first in 1973, and if I remember correctly the storyline and humor are basically the same except for a few things, like instead of the “pit of despair” it’s called the “zoo of death” (lol). What’s interesting about the book is the way the narrative is presented. The whole premise is that the author finds out his favorite childhood book is really boring because as a child, his dad only read him the action-filled parts of the book. (I think that’s where the premise of the grandpa reading the book in the movie comes from). So the author takes it upon himself to re-write the story. The whole story of this “childhood book” is actually completely made-up though, but the author uses it comedically by often cutting in and adding extra commentary, and he does act as if it’s a real historical story. In my personal opinion, I love both the book and movie equally!
