Turning Red UNEDITED REACTION (early access)

Comments

For me this movie and Encanto had great music, but plot wise was very eh. Almost boring even. It is a film more aimed towards girls, because of the puberty as well as the awkward teen girl years. Animation- I am coming from having just watch your Anastasia reaction and the animation for Anya was more beautiful than this 2022 animation. It is its own style, but I’m more drawn to the mix of 2D and 3D. The end discussion- most of the reactors I’ve seen are making the connections of the turning panda to puberty but I have yet to see a reactor mention the culture and message. You guys showed a part of the film that I had not even noticed and it was really good to learn how the message of the film can be seen as offensive. My mom isn’t as strict or embarrassing as Ming, but she was pretty tough during my adolescence years and while I do have some trust issues from things she did as well as other issues. When I compare how ive turned out to my cousins whose parents weren’t tough on them I realize that a little strictness and parents expecting certain things can be good. It doesn’t feel like it at a young age, but when you get older it is a realization of okay, it sucked, but I became a person that is dependable yet still have my independence. As always I enjoyed your movie reactions and cant wait to see more animated reactions. I still have to watch your Avatar reactions, especially with the live action version coming out soon.

First of all, I really want to say, I really like you guys and your reactions. I think you, James, are perceptive and have developing perspectives I (personally) look forward to seeing more of in the future - whatever form or direction you go in. Engaging with stories and understanding the specific reasons and dynamics, especially in how and why it makes you react a specific way. You can't control and manipulate it until you know why a certain piece is causing a certain reaction and can articulate it. I just hope this particular one isn't because it's a 13 year old girl coming of age story (including the reality of neutered (safe) sexuality (4-Town) and the beginning of autonomy from parents - you don't want to leave that too late in a person or they can't function as an adult). I do see your point about the disconnect between the message and the medium. Second (story telling perspective), I was thinking, this is the only Pixar movie that is set in "reality" (or closest to it). Any others, if they start there (like Up), they transition to a fantasy land. Generally, fairytales (even Disney/Pixar in all decades) are used to explore themes and ideas symbolically, for all ages, that would be too painful or scary if it was set in reality (think the Wolf in Little Red Ridinghood). In this way, Mother Gothel can kidnap and gaslight a girl into stockholm syndrome and then die and thus we can talk about how it's not okay to gaslight people, whereas it would be truly horrific if it were real people.
