i feel like the virus is like a regular virus but it can be controlled with treatment. the science teacher's son was probably fine because he knew what was happening to him and had his dad to help him treat it but he lost control of it when he was being bullied and feeling those intense emotions. in the case of the girl who got bit by the hamster or whatever, i think because she was so scared and confused and trying to fight back because of the kidnapping, the virus was making her more "zombie-like" like she thought her life was in danger so she stayed in zombie mode the whole time. these are just guesses though! i have no idea
