There's definitely a stage-to-screen sort of mannerism in a lot of Old Hollywood classics, and you get used to it. But I think the more you watch the more you'll find that there are a lot of great exceptions in terms of nuance and a more natural style of acting. I'm gonna be a broken record and recommend Buster Keaton's The General for a silent action comedy film reaction. I think it will also surprise you in terms of modern viewer's expectations. I would just say to find a quality restoration, nothing grainy, tinted, or colorized; the 4K restoration by Cohen is available via free epix trial in Amazon Prime, I believe.)

And as far as Hitchcock goes, besides Rear Window, check out North By Northwest. Finally, besides the Halloween connection of Janet Leigh being Jamie Leigh Curtis' mom, her boyfriend was Sam Loomis... the same name used in Halloween for Michael's Doctor.
