2021-11-07 07:38:20 +0000 UTCI actually never cared for this film even though I recognise that it is iconic for good reason. However, I loved the discussion portion of this. It's been a while since I've watched the movie but I never felt that Michael was virtuous enough to feel tragic/ "fall from grace." I felt especially after his final talk with his dad that he understood his duty. I think the film portrayed these themes more subtly so I never really felt Michael’s turmoil about getting sucked back in. But the whole concept of "family" within the context of the mafia is actually a very tragic thing because you're trapped and usually the only way out is death. Because of that, it ends up being generational as you said. The video game 'MAFIA' actually digs a little deeper into the tragedy aspect. Final point about the wives and Kay. I don't want to judge either but you did bring up an interesting point James...are they complicit? Well, I'm sure the wives knew to some degree the type of family they were marrying into...so if they chose to still marry then I feel like they kind of made their bed. That's the real tragedy right there. The wives turning a blind eye and marrying into such a family dooms both themselves and their children to a vicious cycle of violence and crime. This is definitely a film I wish I could discuss with you guys in person hahaha...It definitely has many layers.
