One from the Vaults - Evil Henchman - Part 3

Here is the last part of this game.
I talk a bit about the last character you can romance, the other NPCs and the background art I got around to making.

These are the original designs of the remaining characters.

Beastr™ The Brutal Beast Master

Your manager.

Beastr doesn't respect our hero, because he doesn't feel Gary cares about his job.
Which is probably a right assumption, because most of us just do our daily jobs to get paid rather than because we love what we do.
Big and yellow, and probably a bit too close in design to an actual Masters of the Universe character Beastr was hard to please.

His path also involved several deaths (most paths did... I hadn't fine tuned the difficulty of things,) and was a bit hidden.

Several paths (including his) required visiting certain parts of the castle to find items within a very strict time frame, which would have forced people to replay the game several times without unlocking any good ending just to know where things were.

As I said, there are reasons why these games are not done.

Management™

The real bad guy. Management was meant to be the true evil behind the throne. They would decide if the character lived or died by the end of the five hours.
If the character managed to survive, he would be treated to an ending ranging from going back to shoveling manure to replacing Ravageor as the evil overlord.

Facing them required the character to answer an annoying 10 part form with question that had no clear good answers. (The idea of making them be like Human Resources took over a bit, so the game felt muddled at this point.)

Imp™

Once I was pretty much done with the game, I noticed I needed a messenger of sorts that would show up to give messages to the player.

I decided on a green imp with gold details. There was no path for him. He just enjoyed giving bad news to the main character.

I might have gone a bit overboard on the chains.

Backgrounds

I actually got around making backgrounds.

This is a dungeon I did.

At some point when I redesigned the characters I thought about doing the same with the backgrounds.

I did not care much for the result, so I went back to the previous one.

These are the barracks.

This is the place where the main character sleeps in the stables, since he is not a soldier.

These are the stables.

Ravageor's office.

And the armory, filled with weapons and armors.

All this linework took so much time, and while I like the results, it's not something I'd do again without a really strong reason why. Otherwise making a VN would take a lot more time.

And just to finish up, here is the only CG I got around inking.

Gary and his trusty shovel.

As I said before, I consider this game a bit of a lost cause.
The whole thing needs to be rewritten from scratch and I'd probably end up redesigning the characters and the backgrounds because I'm an idiot.

I'm trying to be more regular with the things I post, so I hope everyone enjoys them and I want your opinions on things since they help guide what I do in future projects.

Comments

By the moment I finished writing and showed it to people so they could try it, was the moment I started to realise how hard and unfair the game felt. No one managed one good ending, since the dialogue choices were obtuse and picking one wrong choice meant the difference between a good and a bad ending. For this game to work I would have had to rewrite it completely, and I found that super frustrating. In the end I just shelved it for "future reworks" and eventually started something else.

Would‘ve been super dope if you had actually sticked to it, but I do understand when certain elements in a project seem too off that you kinda wanna throw it all away and start something new. But nice work regardless :^)

BubN

Would be nice to end being Beastr’s property
