The reason it bombed was because it was kind of self sabotaged by disney. The makers (who made most of disneys Renaissance movies) had tried to make it for years but were only allowed to make it because they had a deal that they would make 5 other movies ( little mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules etc.). They then proceeded to botch the marketing, spoiling it in commercials and release it at the same time as harry potter just to make sure it flopped. Just because they used deep canvas which was very expensive and they didn't want to have to make a sequel, it also kinda put the makers in "debt" to disney since they lost their money and disney could have more of a say in their next projects. The ppl who wrote the first script went on to make the Pirates of the Caribbean series so disney knew from the start that it was going to be popular they just wanted to have it their way.
