Haha sorry this wasn't really your thing James but thank you both for giving it a chance. I've never really thought about this film that deeply...it's one of those from my childhood that gives me those warm fuzzy vibes so I always enjoy it for the nostalgia factor :)

The new format's not too shabby! (Although I think the clock was really slow). I've seen this one enough times that I didn't really need the audio to know what was going on. You were onto something with the "more realistic" thing. Although it's still a fairy tale, I think they were trying to create something that could have been the real story that inspired the legend. Like Cinderella but without all the magic, with a stronger female lead who inspires the prince and isn't just rescued by him. And also with a relationship that we get to see grow and develop rather than the typical Disney "we saw each other once and now we're getting hitched!" thing. Also, interesting tidbit in case you didn't know...the short curly-haired guy that was the stepmom's little lackey is Toby Jones, who was the voice of Dobby!! Also the sidekick announcer guy to Stanley Tucci in the Hunger Games.

In my case I personally love this film and loved your reaction! There are too many things in this one! The historical references make this so unique! Leonardo Da Vinci as the fairy godmother? How funny is that? The Women of Weinsberg, the literary references and Utopia quotes, the actual French renaissance castles as filming locations, the gorgeous costume design... All added to a timeless and actually fleshed out romance story, where both characters have an arc and grow... Using as a base one of the most classic and ancient (also my favourite) fairy tales! πŸ€“ I couldn't not love this haha

I never truly cared for this film either. It was interesting in the fact that they didn't try to add in magic/a fairy godmother and instead had Da Vinci (who in my opinion was the greatest character lmao). I love Drew Barrymore generally speaking but I found her performance here really lacking with certain mannerisms that a lot of her characters exhibit but they just fell flat here. And I really was not fond of her English accent, it just sounded so forced and fake. Even as a child I never bought it. Still, I applaud the effort that clearly went into the movie, and I loved the casting for the other characters.

Ahh!! Yes been waiting to see your reaction to this! some Angelica Huston movies to watch Addams Family naturally and The Witches both great options for October.

Kayla

Hey guys! Nerdy historical info: Did you know the scene in which Danielle carries Henry on her back to go away from the gypsies is based on a real legend? When King Conrad III defeated the Duke of Welf (in the year 1140) and placed Weinsberg under siege, the wives of the besieged castle negotiated a surrender which granted them the right to leave with whatever they could carry on their shoulders. The king allowed them that. Leaving everything else aside, each woman took her own husband on her shoulders and carried him out. When the king's people saw what was happening, many of them said that that was not what had been meant and wanted to put a stop to it. The king then laughed and accepted the trick. He said that "A king should always stand by his word." :D

What's weird is I never liked this movie much either and it definitely COULD have been my thing, for some reason it just felt really lacking. I think they made some casting mistakes and they needed to write some more depth in their characters and it would have been massively improved.

Ahhhh!! I'm so ready for this :D

AshicallyMe

It's also on Disney+ for the people that have it!
