Yaffa! Trans Day of Snack planning!

Hey friends,

Sorry, I let the newsletter get away from me a bit, lol. Here's everything I meant to mention before I accidentally wrote a whole thing about some Instagram user named John.

This week on Gender Conceal, Ozzy and I spoke with Palestinian organizer Yaffa! I particularly appreciated their insight into the Pomona student encampments, and why their strategies were so successful relative to other campuses.

If you already listened to the Yaffa ep, you already heard me say this once, but here we go again: it's almost March, which means Trans Day of (staying in and having a nice) Snack is coming up, and I'm trying to figure out what this year's organizing efforts will look like. For myriad reasons, I'd love to shift away from the "personally Venmo-ing every trans person" strategy. Instead, I'm hoping that we can help facilitate local TDOS events around the world. (I'm also happy to see other online spinoffs pop up—I know that not everyone wants to meet in person—but I do think that it’s important to be building local IRL community, having offline conversations, and exchanging material tangible resources.)

To this end, I'm asking that you imagine planning your own little TDOS event. (You don't have to actually do it; this is an imagination exercise.) What would you need help with? What questions or concerns would you have? Please LET US KNOW, so that we can start working on an FAQ and other resources.

Again, you're not committing to anything by asking a question! I just want an idea of what concerns people have or what obstacles they foresee. (Thank you to the two folks who have already sent in questions; they're both great!) Of course, if you do want to start planning your own event... hell yeah.

One more thing:

That’s it for this week. Here’s your Weekly Rhubarb (with friend).

What date is TDOS? Just in case I’m not too late to think about organising something this year? Otherwise, I guess I’ve got nearly a year to figure it out 😁

Mina

Do you have vegan snack suggestions?

Sam Hawkins

we already made the episode so just answering this one directly: I would send them the vice or popsugar articles probably! https://www.popsugar.com/smart-living/trans-day-of-visibility-mutual-aid-49349835

Tuck

How do I explain Trans day of snack to people who haven't heard of it but would be on board with helping organizing an event? (we're trying to do one in CT!)

Sam

In my beautiful imagination, I would invite the gay bagel shop in Tacoma to bring bagels to the park🤧🥺

Tendril

We've got a local trans group in my area with an online presence. Meetings are sometimes held in the local library system (free indoor meeting space, masks recommended). Trans Day of Having a Nice Snack sounds like something I should bring up and see if we can organize. Thanks for all you do Tuck. (and uh, sorry for all the message spam I've left on this post)

Ok. Also. THANK YOU x1000 for sharing the Callum Angus essay. I've loved Fresa y Chocolate since I first watched it 20 years ago. I'm also a Park Service kid and grew up in and around the National Park System. The headline about Stonewall removing the T was a gut punch (as so many things have been lately), but I am of the same mindset as Callum on the monument and passport markers. Is it f*cked and coming from a place of hatred? Absolutely, 100%. But I also recognise that the establishment doesn't get to tell me who I am, regardless of the letters they list or don't list on their formal paperwork. "It may be impossible to live without them in our lifetimes. But they are not truth."

Zee

(If we just prioritised reuse & recycle and closed loop manufacturing, and invested in the necessary infrastructure, we could definitely recycle more than we currently do!)

Zee

Good for NYC on recycling! (I guess?!) That information definitely doesn't extend to the rest of the country and I have a hard time believing it. Where I live we use the motto "when in doubt, leave it out" because SO MUCH of what people put in the bins is not recyclable in this region, and is treated as trash when it gets to the recycling center. When too much of the truck bringing in recycling is contaminated, it ALL winds up in the trash. That article astounds me.

Zee

If I were planning an event I think my first roadblock would be how to get the word out there. I don’t have a huge social media presence, and I have like my personal trans friends but if I only invited the trans people I know then it would be no different then a normal hang out with my friends. Would also get caught up on where to host it. Weather in my area is unpredictable at best this time of year so I would hesitate to do a park. If indoors I would want to highly recommend masks/have some masks available.

Mo

you're soooooooo right that this is going against the "...staying in and..." spirit and I do believe there will be be plenty of Venmoing going on!

Tuck

I'd love to host an in person trans day of snack event!! My imagined scenarios for this happening are: 1. I'd love to do a community event where people can show up and socialize and SNACK. a question I have is, would there be any grants for community organizers purchasing snacks/resources for the event? maybe as a pwyc event, trans folks get in free (ofc) and cis-allies could donate to pay for the snacks/other resources! Also having different activities at the event such as collage, or things for ppl to do with their hands while they snack/mingle is always fun! Going to pitch to make this happen in my city asap! 2. Alternatively a lil trans potluck with loved ones would be very sweet ✨

Ok so I love in-person events, but the amount of energy required to go to an in-person event (ie I probably would not be able to do anything else that day because it would use all my spell slots), let alone help organize one, feels a little counter to the whole “staying in and having a nice snack” thing. I realize not everyone has the privilege of being able to stay inside somewhere and have a snack, but would still love to have an option to venmo other people who just want to stay in and have a snack without having to max out already limited energy 🧡

Piper

I'd love some thoughts on how to design an IRL event (for the sake of ~community~) that recognizes a lot of trans folks will be apprehensive if they don't already have trans friends to go with. should the event also be open to cis pals? maybe we could ask something of the cis pals to support the event? or maybe there's some other ways to help people feel a bit more comfy eating snacks with strangers?

Jas

RIGHT like what am I supposed to BELIEVE

Tuck

That recycling article 💀

Torrence Gregory

Would love to hear any thoughts on whether to require masks and how to go about enforcing or not enforcing that? Also would love to hear any thoughts on how to address possible safety concerns!

Max

My ✨imagined tdos event✨ looks like organizing a tdos potluck at a local park, and maybe receiving some gender reveal funds to purchase some additional snacks/supplies to ensure we definitely have food for everyone who comes

E F.

I would love some suggestions on where to host/how public to make it? My 15 trans friends in my house? Or like ... Anyone ever at the ,,,, library? Hope it's not to cold and go outside?
