Hey friends,

Hope you’re all hanging in there, staying warm and dry wherever you are. (Is everyone in the continental United States experiencing the same storm, or are there just several similar storms that I’m hearing about? How big is weather? What is wind? Ok, anyway…)

As I’ve mentioned, this week marks the start of our 12th season! To kick things off, I’m so excited to share my conversation with Lamya H, author of Hijab Butch Blues. We talked about:

Almost titling their book “Maryam Is a Dyke” (!)
Being called “sir” while wearing hijab
How using the word “nonbinary” for God allowed Lamya to use it for herself
How having a baby helped Lamya assert their own gender
Queer themes in the Quran
Israeli pinkwashing (and queer efforts against it)
The speed record for passing through every NYC subway stop

In addition to editing episodes, Ozzy and I are still actively booking, researching, and recording the rest of the season. By the end of January, we should have half of the season recorded! Very exciting for me personally.

Speaking of, next week on the show, we’ll be catching up with multimedia artist Salimatu Amabebe. You might recognize Salimatu from his work with Black Feast, or from episode 83 of this podcast. Since we last spoke On The Record ™, Salimatu started grad school, came out to his family, got top surgery, and introduced to the world to his slutty alien alter ego. You won’t wanna miss it!
