Sweeney Todd UNEDITED REACTION (early access)

I was a Musical Theater major in college, and my friends used to call me/show up at my door in the middle of the night and sing one of the songs from this show to me as creepily as they could. Guess which one. 😝

Johanna Wilson

Yep, I've always loved Sweeney Todd. One of my favourite musicals! Depp does make a singing appearance in Into The Woods which is another great musical you guys should check out. Although not quite as dark themed lol.

My favorite movie ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Every song gives me goosebumps specially Johanna Reprise and Not While I’m Around. And that twist is one of the best things I’ve ever seen 👌🏻 Fun fact: I heard the music before seeing the movie cause when the movie came out I was little and my mom didn’t allowed me to watch it so when I saw the movie I knew all the songs already xD

Mariela Oquendo Rodríguez

Also, it's funny you guys said it wasn't too dark, because this version is actually quite a bit darker than the stage production. (Not that it's not dark too, but there's a lot more dark humor in the stage version)

Stephen Sondheim is, in my opinion, the best composer in musical theater. This, Into the Woods, Company, Follies. I mean, the man is just a genius. He's also notorious for writing some of the most difficult songs to sing lol

Now that you've seen Hamilton, you can watch the mashup of the opening of Hamilton and Sweeney Todd that Lin rewrote the lyrics for for the BC/EFA Easter Bonnet Competition in 2016 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bruTOQoNtO4)

Yeah, I really like what they did with the blood. It helps it not be too much it still packs a punch

Neil Patrick?? Dang. That’s crazy

This was a great reaction to encounter! I've seen Sweeney Todd onstage many times, and it actually has a lot more singing than the movie -- there are framing and narrating choruses (the instrumental music is still there at the start of the movie, but the singing isn't). There are also two official videos of staged productions, which might be a fun comparison though I don't expect you to do it. The first one has Angela Lansbury, the original Mrs. Lovett, and she's very funny besides singing it very well. The second one has Neil Patrick Harris as the apprentice Toby (who is older in the stage version). Certainly a fascinating musical, with a lot of music -- several opera companies have done it.

Okay lots of things: Not While I’m Around is one of my favorite songs from a musical. Anthony Head (Giles from Buffy) was originally in a song with Christopher Lee but it was cut, but Anthony makes a brief appearance in the movie. The blood looked dated when it came out, it’s on par with the blood in Sleepy Hollow. Intentionally not blood like but makes an impact. Sacha Baron Cohen was brilliant in this, and he and Helena play a couple in Les Miserables. And my favorite thing to think about is Angela Lansbury (Mrs Potts from the original Beauty and the Beast) played Lovett for a while

Never seen Ed Wood but i have heard it is one of Tim Burton's and Johnny Depp's best work .

Please do Crybaby (another Johnny Depp musical!) - its the best

Isabella Hayes-Hollands

Sorry guys I know we are watching Sweeney Todd which I also love get a bit carried away sometimes .

Linda Wightman

Johnny Depp is brilliant as Ed Wood apparently the worst film director of all time but its definitely Martin Landau that shines he won the best actor in a supporting role at the Oscars for his wonderful portrial of Bela Lugosi.

Linda Wightman

You guys should react to more Tim Burton films Ed Wood and Frankenwee are just among 2 of my favourites.

Saw this in the theater when it came out and was instantly moved , disgusted and surprised by the motivations and the twisted fates of each character as the movie progressed . This was the one i thought the Academy would recognize Johnny Depp for, not for his singing ability , but his moving and transformative performance as Sweeney . He got nominated but lost to the master acting ability of Daniel-Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood . Still a very moving and bloody masterpiece .

Can't wait to watch this later. Musically I prefer the George hearn version but on an aesthetic level this movie's pretty much perfect. Of course I love Johnny Depp so that helps too. An interesting thing to note about this movie as opposed to the play is that from what I remember the play takes itself way less seriously. That's kind of common with the Sondheim movie adaptations though. Into the woods took itself way more seriously than the play. Personally I think it's good that this movie is its own thing. The only thing I really don't like is that they cut most of the chorus and a lot of stuff with Joanna and Anthony. I feel like the music really suffers without the chorus. Also I miss the ballad of Sweeney Todd but It's totally understandable why that wouldn't be necessary in a movie. Honestly I feel the same way about this movie that I do about the watchmen movie in a way. Like the watchmen movie it as good of an adaptation as they could have possibly made, and you can tell there was real passion behind it. And on the surface it works but there's some kind of spark missing if you're a die-hard fan of the original. That being said I don't think that anyone but Tim Burton could have directed a movie adaptation of this.
