Second Annual Gender Reveal Patron Survey results!

Hey friends,

Hope you’re all hanging in there. Not much news that I can report here, so let me give you a few highlights from our 2023 Patron Survey!

First, a disclaimer: Roughly 20% of our patrons participated in the survey, so keep in mind that there’s selection bias here — we’re getting the perspective of not only the people who care about Gender Reveal enough to give us money about it (thank you!!!), but who also care enough to read the newsletter and fill out an elaborate google survey (thank you thank you!!!!). That all said, here’s what we found:

Stats:

4/5ths of respondents have been listening to Gender Reveal for at least two years. Meanwhile, a few of you have still never listened to the show! (Dang, thank you for supporting our work anyway, that’s so noble of you!)
Half of you are monogamous, 85% are queer, 40% are bisexual, 15% are asexual, and only 4% are straight. God bless.
Almost 4/5ths of you live in a city, while at least two of you live on an island, and one person says they live in “a wildlife sanctuary in the middle of the Australian bush” (!!!!).
Roughly half of respondents are neurodivergent in some way; almost 30% have ADHD. (Shout out to any of y’all who have drug-resistant ADHD like me lol lmao.)
Almost 2/3rds of you have at least a few IRL trans friends (yay!), and more than 1/4 of you have a trans partner! :)

From the gender-specific sections:

Only 10% of respondents marked themselves as cisgender, and then several of those explained later in the comments that they’re not actually very cis lololol.
75% of non-cis respondents described themselves as nonbinary, which is actually higher than the % who describe themselves as trans (67%).
Similarly, 84% of non-cis respondents use “they” pronouns at least sometimes.
Half of non-cis respondents have HRT’d, and 30% or so have had a ~gender surgery~.
Only 3 “cis boys” responded; shout out to you three!

Other podcasts:

I didn’t do an official count, but it looks like the most popular podcasts among Gender Reveal listeners are Normal Gossip, TransLash, and various Michael Hobbes properties. Other popular pods include our friends at Cancel Me Daddy, Food 4 Thot, Queersplaining, Big Mood Little Mood, Just Between Us, Code Switch, Behind the Bastards, and Death Panel.(McElroy properties were also popular; shout out specifically to the person who wrote “MBMBAM, though less and less these days as the vibes have been significantly off for some time now.” Same, buddy.) A few of you are listening to podcasts that I deeply dislike, and I like imagining us fistfighting each other in ur podcast app and/or brain.
I’ve mentioned this before, but lots and lots of you mentioned not listening to Gender Conceal because it doesn’t show up in your main feed. No pressure to listen, but also some of them have been true bangers, so if anyone would like help adding it to your podcast app, let me know! (Or you can probably also get help in the Slack, if you’re in there.)

Fun bits:

Someone said they have listened to every episode at least 5 times, which might actually be more than I have listened to some of the episodes? So you’re officially the #1 gender detective detective, congrats!!!
One person specifically mentioned cancelling their NYT subscription and funding us instead. God bless.
Someone said in passing that their trans kid named themselves after a gay dragon from a book???????? Sorry to dox this child but I’m obsessed.

One of my favorite snippets: “I started calling myself a transsexual and faggot more often in large part of this podcast, and it used to be a bit, but now it's not? as in I have the word faggot tattooed onto my physical body?”
Someone said that they don’t listen to old episodes because they get second-hand gender dysphoria from my pre-T voice, and another person said they don’t listen because they’re avoiding me deadnaming me myself. Shout out to the only two true allies!! (Like I assume you’re trans but you’re an ally to ME lol.)
Someone wrote in “birdwatching” for sexual orientation and we love that.
Someone wrote “First trans day of snack was the first time I ever identified as trans to anybody else” and hey congrats I hope you got a good snack!!!!!!
