Yeah the dynamic in this episode feels different. I feel like L lost motivation, and when he got it back, he wanted to try new ideas and ways of doing things. so it may feel out of character, but I think he's feeling he needs to switch things up to make new headway in the case

Also L is the type to always be setting up test and taking in information however I don’t believe it’s in his personality to be testing Aizawa’s loyalty at this point.
