Penguins! Baking disasters! How to be a trans scientist!

Hey everyone,

Hope you're hanging in there. I was just reading Stephen King's review of Celeste Ng's new book, and he started with the OED's definition of dystopia, which is, "An imaginary place in which everything is as bad as possible.” I don't know why (hmmmm...) but that line is hitting very hard tonight!!!!

Anyway.

It's the last week for September merch, if you're into that sort of thing. (I think we're maybe low on new designs for October and beyond, so hit me up if you've got anything. It's also possible that we have a stockpile that I've forgotten about in the inbox.)

In podcast news, Ozzy and I had a big, long meeting to put together a tentative lineup for season 10! It's a weird and wild and fun one and I'm excited to see where we end up with it. Thanks to everyone who reached out with union + teacher suggestions; we'll be getting in touch with some of you soon.

Not much else to report, so here's Links & Stuff:

Oh, also, here's where to find more extremely powerful queer mermaid ornaments

That's it for this week. Here's your weekly Rhubarb.

PS: I have decided that Ruby needs more toys even though she certainly doesn't, so please tell me your cats' favorite toys in the comments; thanks in advance

I have a Da Bird for my cats at they have a lot of fun with it! Also highly recommend Yeowwwww catnip toys, that is the best catnip! So strong! I have bought my cats so many toys, though of course their favourite is this very old mouse toy that used to belong to the cats before them that they just love to keep playing with. It was Eloise's first birthday yesterday, bought her a super fun froggy toy, she keeps playing with the mouse. Cats! I love them.

2 words. Craft Feathers. Fantastic budget option and my cat absolutely loves them. Be careful with your fingers if your cat has claws. Try to find long craft feathers if possible to protect the human digits

My cat goes feral over those toys, too. We have a few variations on the theme of mouse (or other chewable toy) on an elastic attached to a stick. We also keep those hidden in a drawer because she will destroy them if they're left out (she also likes to eat string, cord, shoelaces, etc, and I don't want that surgery bill). We actually just ordered a Halloween-themed set of these toys from Chewy.com because I couldn't not. Also my cat has recently decided she wants to play right when we're about to go to sleep and screams about it. That's when those toys come out.

Visucien

Highly recommend the plastic ring around like a jug of milk, a scrap of ribbon, or those little foam bouncy balls

I bought a mouse one and saw a side of my sweet kitten I never knew existed 😮 Full lizard brain unlocked 😅 it lives hidden in a drawer now lol

um also this is a whole ass saga but we long ago bought these realistic mouse and bird toys (on wires, with a wand to hold) and those are the forbidden toys that we keep locked away because they're too real and the cats lose their damn minds. proceed with caution. they're called Go Cat.

laser pens! and this is not quite a toy, but my cats also love cardboard scratchy things, like the imperial cat scratch'n shapes. we put catnip on them and they love to scratch and nap on them and it's so cute to behold

jaime

ooh I think we have that roller thing too, we call it Cat Video Game but the real name is much better apparently

Tuck

hehehehe we were just playing with String and it was a big hit!! I hope Melba is doing well :)

We are suckers for queer themed toys so we got the Pride flag mice and bees from Target (I know, awful but, yeah). We also have a thing called Chase Meowtain that is three tracks with rolly balls stacked on top of each other. Our lesbian kitties love all the toys!

Revel Bikil and Alixe

This may not the retail-therapy-inducing answer you want but my cats’ favorite toys: Marla(RIP): shoelace or string on a hoodie, Melba the foster: a piece of paper crumpled into a ball
