Kirigan is a beacon to the volcra. If he'd try to enter the fold, they would immediatly come to attack. Hence, he needs Alina's light sort of as a safety shield.

Hey, new here I remember thinking all the same about Kirigam and discussing his motivations. He is, in my opinion, the best character as per the complexity related. Imagine he is far beyond 100 years old now fighting this war, and in his head, alone.

I always thought that Shadow and Bone was a pretty standard (almost formulaic) YA Fantasy book, with the exception of the General Kirigan and Alina's story. The author was just coming out of a really abusive and manipulative relationship when she wrote it and I think it really shows. She took the trope of the "dark brooding male lead" and flipped it on its head. Bardugo was actually teaching young readers that a controlling partner that will "do anything to have you" or "do anything for their cause" is not what you want. Capturing Alina, threatening Mal to manipulate her, then using the stag to enslave her is abusive behavior. He had no interest in her he only had an interest in using her. And I think the same can be said for how he feels about the grisha. His ideas of "helping" them was to force them to enlist in the second army. To me it looks like he failed making his army of volcra so instead he created another army. His words say one thing but his actions say another. Also shout out to whoever casted this tv show, the age difference between the actor that plays General Kirigan (39) and the age of Alina (16) just screams grooming. It was genius.

Merzost is magic in general. Grisha power is Small Science. They can manipulate what already exists through Small Science. They aren't making something new when they throw fire or blow the wind around. Merzost is essentially the power of creation, which basically requires a give and take. You have to give something to make something. The Darkling created his army (the Volcra), but the consequence was that he also created the Fold and had no control over the Volcra. That's why his mother initially said he mustn't use Merzost, because it always comes at a price.
