So, that was disturbing. I'm with you guys. Kinda don't wanna watch that again. Definitely in the European psychological horror genre for me. To me, there was nothing supernatural happening. It was pretty much just cult ritualism. The scene where she is crying and all the women start crying with her, is psychological mirroring. It's used alot in brainwashing. We even see it in mob mentality and in religious festivities, ie. People chanting and fainting, etc. In her instance, her feeling of loneliness and emptiness is washed away by feeling connected to the other women. They fed her drugs and preyed on her vulnerabilities to indoctrinate her into their community. I don't think it was an accident she became the May Queen either. I think that her 'self' was so broken by the end that she gave herself over to them, and the pain and anguish and betrayal and hurt was so intensified by the rest of the commune that of course she was going to sacrifice Christian. He was a sucky boyfriend anyway IMO. But being hit with goofer dust at the end to paralyse him so he could be burnt alive, was...extreme. Well, they're my thoughts on the movie anyway. Not going to re-watch it to analyse it. Lol.
