also forgot to add, this movie has absolutely no supernatural elements to it, as opposed to hereditary. i think that ari aster means for us to question throughout the whole of midsommar whether there is something supernatural going on when there actually isn't, whereas in his previous horror film, hereditary, he almost makes you question the complete opposite the whole time like: is the mom actually just bipolar/schizophrenic and none of this is really supernatural? can we trust the narrator? i don't know i just think it's interesting how because of the pay-off in the last movie being that there WAS a supernatural, demon worshipping cult, we go into this one wondering if it's going to have that element and almost convincing ourselves there must be. but the true horror of this movie is the fact that there isn't, like it's just collective hysteria and cult insanity, indoctrinating those who are already vulnerable into their midst.

you guys are feeling exactly what you should be feeling at the end of the movie, you’re not really supposed to be horrified, you’re meant to be immensely disturbed and uncomfortable – it’s definitely a very, very fucked up movie! something that ari aster does extremely well is showcasing a main character’s suffering and emotional breakdown throughout the course of his films. their pain is acknowledged and celebrated, though not passed off as a good thing. the fact that dani is smiling in the end is explicitly meant to be tragic and jarring. i think the key is that dani’s pov remains front and center. she never really slips into the background, not even when she succumbs completely to the cult. ALSO: ari aster originally wanted the movie to be displayed with a white aspect ratio, as opposed to the typical black bars shown at the top and bottom of the film screen. imagine seeing that in the theater, just blinding white light – no reprieve for your eyes, just like with the swedish midnight sun. anyway, insane movie with a very different feel from hereditary but i think that’s absolutely intentional.

Yeah I kinda agree. It was very well, I just feel I didn’t understand some of the meaning behind it. Which made it seem as if there wasn’t much “payoff”

I haven’t seen this movie before. I’m not easily disturbed yet I kinda agree with James it’s beyond the level where you enjoy the shock value of the whole thing. There are no payoff moments or plot that brings closure. I’m sure that there is some comment on bipolar syndrome in there, just didn’t do anything for me personally other than be disturbing .

Omg I can't stand awkward conversations but I can also relate. Will Poulter doesn't seem like that big of an ass this movie as he is in other movies. I'm also going for my PhD after my degree and masters so I think I can understand these people. It's so interesting why they choose these types of people actually.
