Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban UNEDITED REACTION

Comments

This was directed by Alfonso Cuaron, that's why it feels so different. Foreign directors tend to have this non-hollywood vision that makes them so SO refreshing. They are able to break conventions we didn't even know were there.

Marcos Molina

Just finished watching this and want to give you a bit more information about Snape’s role in all of this. I feel okay to add these details knowing you have already watched all the movies at this point in time. The books do a much better job of covering the animosity between Snape and the Marauders. On top of the bad blood between Snape and James Potter (which has been referenced since the first movie) James and Sirius really bullied Snape quite badly. Snape gave back as good as he got, but James and Sirius were the instigators. The Prisoner of Azkaban book goes into the fact that as a student Snape was suspicious about what the Marauders got up to. So Sirus decided to play a practical joke on him. It resulted in Snape following them into the tunnel under the Whomping Willow and coming face-to-face with Lupin in his werewolf form. James came to Snape’s rescue. But it took the bullying situation to a new level. Snape was convinced Sirius had tried to kill him. And he could have been killed if not for James. On top of this, Dumbledore made Snape promise to keep the whole thing secret so that other students wouldn’t learn that Lupin was a Werewolf. Snape really resented this. Still, when Lupin became the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher this year Snape kept him well supplied with a Wolfsbane potion to help control his condition. But he also assigned the students that essay to write about werewolves in order to see if any of them could figure it out for themselves. When Snape discovered Sirius in the Shrieking Shake his rage towards him in the book is really extreme. But readers need to understand that he honestly thought that Sirius was responsible for selling James and Lily out to Voldemort and he wanted to see Sirius get the Dementors Kiss for real. He was quite upset when Sirius escaped. And while Dumbledore eventually explained the situation, Snape felt no compunction about outing Lupin at that point. And honestly, Lupin could have really hurt a student if things had gone wrong that night when he turned into a werewolf without the Wolfsbane potion. With all the focus on the Whomping Willow in this movie, I thought that I would mention that at the height of Potter popularity there were a number of bands and single acts that wrote and performed Harry Potter related music. They performed at Harry Potter Conferences and other events they would set up. A few of them were quite good. One performer called himself The Whomping Willow. If you ever think that might be something to check out I would recommend the following acts, Harry and the Potters, Draco and the Malfoys, Oliver Boyd and the Remembrals, The Ministry of Magic and the Mudbloods. I think all of these acts still have tracks on iTunes and probably some on YouTube. The Prisoner of Azkaban is my favorite of the first three books, which are all significantly shorter then the four final books. Are you planning to do a reading reaction program on Patreon? I saw it mentioned somewhere.

That's hilarious dude lol

fun fact, u can see two ppl having sex in a corner in the credits with the marauders map. haha

I agree. That's how it is in real life. It doesn't matter who ur family is or what ur "bloodline" is and I like that Rowling makes a point to highlight that reality in the Wizarding World.

The amount of lore behind all these books is amazing. I am trying my best to respond to all the comments, but forgive me if I don't. Seeing how much you all now (and are teaching us lol) makes me happy to be really diving into the Wizarding World.

Thanks man! That's so awesome about the practical effects. Honestly that's the best way to do fantastical things like that in my opinion.

I agree. I honestly think Hagrid said it best in COS when he said there's no wizards left who aren't at least half diluted. I actually love the fact that Harry doesn't care enough to find out or state it one way or the other. To some (we know who they are but I want to give nothing away) your blood status is everything but it doesn't really matter in the great scheme of things. Power has nothing to do with the bloodline and everything to do with that particular witch and wizard. Yes we can write full on novels about this! I LOVE talking about HP. :)

I think these guys are going to have to get used to novel-length posts from us LOL. You’re in good company! It’s great too, because between several so far, I think all of us are giving them tons of good spoiler-free info. —- I always felt like half-blood most accurately applies to Harry as well, just because for something to be “pure”... it feels like there should be no trace of anything else. But I suppose I think of it like any race, just like the real world. Very very very few people in the world are pure anything anymore (which is awesome - score for diversity). If the HP universe were real, I think almost everyone would be “halfsies” one way or another.

I just found you guys today and I'm so excited to watch people discover Harry Potter for the first time. It makes it new for us again as well to see it through your eyes. You asked about Pettigrew/Wormtail calling Voldemort the Dark Lord. That was a great catch. Only the bravest call him Voldemort, most call him either you know who or he who must not be named. And then Voldemort's followers call him the dark lord. Interestingly, Dumbledore calls him Tom Riddle still. People have already explained the mauraders but the four best friends did everything together. I'm sure someone pointed this out already but I didn't see it so.... the mauraders consist of James Potter whose animangus and patronus were a stag was Prongs named for the antlers (Harry's patronus matches his father's and yes full body forms are incredibly difficult but I'll talk about that later). Lupin was moony hinting to his werewolf form, Padfoot was Sirius after his animangus dog. And Peter Pettigrew was a rat and thus wormtail. The three minus Lupin studied for years to become animangus and keep their friend company. They chose two large forms to protect/control lupins wolf and one tiny to be able to sneak up and stop the tree from moving. You will see more about their friendship in later ones. The mauraders are the one thing I truly wish they had left in because it really connected to Harry and gave him pieces of his past and also explained how they knew what the map was and how to work it. As to the dementors targeting Harry they really didn't. At least not intentionally. The first time, they were searching the train for Sirius and checking each car. They feed on misery and make you relive your worst moments. Harry hears his mother scream his name when they get close because he witnessed his mother's murder. He was too young to really remember it but its there. He lives in misery with the Dursleys (there is a reason for that but I don't want to spoil anything) so Harry has a lot of unhappiness in his life. Therefore put a dementor around Harry and it would be like seating a starving man at a table full of food. They can't help it really. The second time they were drawn by the high emotions of the quiddich match and happened upon Harry flying because I'm sure a single player up in the air is an easier target than someone in a stadium surrounded by powerful wizards. The last time they were coming for Sirius and Harry got in the way. Someone already said it but I just want to repeat, Sirius never wanted to kill Harry, he loves him, he just wanted to kill Peter Pettigrew. And while I am on that topic let's discuss the escape from Azkaban. The day the Potters died, they were in hiding as Voldy was hunting them. More on that in movie 5. Sirius was the Potters secret keeper. This means that voldy could be looking right at them but unless Sirius told him they were there, he wouldn't see them. Everyone knew Sirius was their secret keeper. Now he suspected they had a mole reporting to voldy. He thought it was Lupin so Sirius went to Peter and transferred secret keeper status to him. Of course the mole was actually Peter. He went after their deaths to confront Peter. Peter caused an explosion killing several muggles and cut off his finger to show he was "dead". Sirius knew he had betrayed the Potters but thought Peter was dead as well and feeling guilty due to putting his trust in the wrong person, he stayed in Azkaban. UNTIL, he saw the news article shown in the beginning of the movie of the Weasleys in Egypt. Ron had Scabbers (Pettigrew) on his shoulder. Sirius saw it and knew he had been duped. He changed into his animangus form where dementors couldn't sense him and walked out. He stopped to see Harry (right before the Knight bus picked up Harry) and then headed for Hogwarts. The full body expecto patronum is incredibly difficult and very advanced magic. The strength of the one Harry cast to sent away the hundred dementos was astounding. There are few wizards in the world who could do that and he is only 13. I feel like the movies focus on it being almost luck or him just kind of being an average student. Given the right teacher and motivation Harry is powerful as hell. You questioned earlier about Harry's parents being wizards, they both were. James was a pureblood meaning his family had always been wizards. Lily was a Muggleborn like Hermione meaning no knowable wizard ancestors. There is some debate over what this makes Harry but I believe he would be a halfblood though I have seen compelling arguments that say since both parents had magic he would be full blood. Now that I have written a novel I will stop. I hope you continue to enjoy them just as much and I hope you found this at least partly interesting.

Balls. Patreon didn’t keep my post lol ahhhhh well. Loved the reaction! I think you guys are really going to enjoy how the story progresses and where it goes. It’s so tough because the books are a wealth of information and it’s just not possible to get all of that in the films, but I feel like you’d love the backstory and details in them. Paintings aren’t touched on at all in the films, but Rowling has expanded on them. They’re “paint and memory”, enchanted with a considerable amount of the personality of the witch/wizard who sat for the portrait. How powerful the individual was as well as how long they spent allowing the painting to be made contributes to how detailed and accurate their personification is. Well spotted with Lupin’s name! Rowling riddled the series with a ton of Latin and mythology. Lupin derives from the Latin word “lupus”, which means “wolf”. His first name Remus is from Roman mythology. Twin brothers Remus and Romulus were said to have been the founders of Rome after being left to die as babies. They were found by a she-wolf who nursed and raised them. Fun fact: Rowling created the Dementors based on the inspiration of depression. Thought that was so clever and fascinating, and it’s evident not only in their appearance, but especially in the way they impact people. I also like to think that Lupin’s chocolate remedy is a little nod to people being prone to indulging in sweets more when they’re depressed. The patronus Harry cast at the end was what’s known as a corporeal (or full-bodied) patronus. It’s very difficult to cast and as someone mentioned above, it’s different from person to person. Harry and his father both had a patronus of a stag. Won’t say any more about the topic because I don’t want to spoil anything. The same person gave you great info about James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter during their time at Hogwarts. Remus was bitten by a werewolf at the age of 5 I think, and his friends all decided to become unregistered animagi to keep him company (and controlled) when he turned each month. Being an unregistered animagus isn’t exactly legal, by the way lol. For instance, Professor McGonagall (who we’ve seen transform into a cat) is a lady who definitely follows the rules and as such, is completely registered. There’s loads more in the books, but at least there’s a little more for you. Can’t wait for next week! Take care.

Yeah I was a little confused...but we figured it out! 😂😂

Sirius never wanted to kill Harry, he escaped from Azkaban to try find Peter and kill Peter because of what he did to James (and Lily) which is his best friend

This is my favorite movie of the series! The story, the way the movie is made, it's so good! A few answers to your questions: - Wizards can perform non-verbal spells and start to learn how to in their sixth year. Wandless magic also exists, a few examples which you've seen already with Harry making the glass disappear in the first movie, blowing up his aunt or Dumbledore saving Harry during Quidditch. - Hagrid is half giant. He's mother was a giantess and his father was a wizard. Hagrid keeps it a secret though because of prejudices. It's an entire story arc in the fourth book, which is a bit sad and definitely something you should read about once you've watched all movies. - A full patronus takes the form of an animal and the animal differs from person to person. Harry's patronus is a stag just like his father's. Also, the Whomping Willow was placed on the Hogwarts grounds to protect the entrance of the tunnel that leads to the Shrieking Shack, which once served as a sort of shelter for Lupin when he attended Hogwarts. Each full moon, Lupin would go to the Shrieking Shack to spend the night there as a werewolf, accompanied by his friends; Harry's father James, Sirius and Peter. All three of them are Animagi: James is a stag (like his patronus), Sirius a dog and Peter a rat. They call themselves the Marauders and are the creators of the Marauders Map. Mooney (Lupin), Wormtail (Peter), Padfoot (Sirius) and Prongs (James). This is how Lupin and Sirius knew the map didn't lie since they created it. Another fun thing to mention is that they created a practical Buckbeak animatronic, down to every last feather. They did this previously for Fawkes and the Basilisk as well and combine the practical model with CGI in the movies. It's brilliantly done. Wonderful reaction by the way! I really enjoy you guys watching Harry Potter. You're both quick to catch onto stuff, even the little details.

Sounds good!
