Techniques w/ Thor Larsen - Creating a Plaster Cast

Creating a Plaster Cast from a Silicone Mold with Thor Larsen

The first installment in a series of Technique related content to be featured on The FAA Collective.

Dear Patrons,

Thank you for your support! This week we would like to share with you a video of artist Thor Larsen demonstrating his technique for creating a plaster cast from a silicone mold.

Plaster casts of death masks or sculptures are a common sight in ateliers and often play an integral role in the training of representational artists; yet how they are replicated with such fidelity over the ages tends to be a mystery to many. We are excited to present you with this video describing an important part of the intricate process.

Thor Larsen is an alumnus of The Florence Academy of Art, current faculty member, and working sculptor.

Techniques w/ Thor Larsen - Creating a Plaster Cast

Hi Ev, Happy that you liked the video. My favorite way of β€œsealing” the plaster is to brush milk on to the surface, and let it dry for a bit, then after polishing the surface with a bit of talcum on a cotton ball or a soft cloth. It will give a nice sealed shine to the surface.

Thank you so much Felicity!

Really interesting, I had no idea how they made casts, now I have a bit of an idea. Thank you! Beautiful footage.

Great to see the process broken down in the video. Is there a finishing process at all to seal casts?- I have tried a little beeswax and buffing on my studio casts but I always wondered if the classical ateliers and studios finished them with anything. Obviously over the years, dust buildup, oils and handling creates a lovely authentic patina.
