What do we think about Barbie?

Hey Tribe,

I took Irie to see the Barbie yesterday so you know we had to wear all pink. I’ve been reflecting on what Barbie meant to me growing up and she definitely did create an ideal of what I thought a beautiful girl is supposed to look like. I remember her anatomy being the first time I really started to explore the “female body” and being intrigued that she had breasts and no lady parts lol. I actually don’t even remember playing with baby dolls at all. Just Barbie.

Which got me thinking….is there is an “age appropriate” time to introduce Barbie into your child’s life?

I actually enjoyed the movie and the way they addressed the problematic ways Barbie has effected young girls and women and further strengthened the patriarchy. A lot of jokes went over my 8 year olds head and I think it was definitely more catered to a demographic of people who are far beyond the days of playing with Barbie and her dream house.

I’m happy to see the inclusivity but they definitely kept race and any other tough topics beyond gender roles out of it. Do you think think they should have touched on that more? Or keep it light for the kiddos?

Overall, I would rate the film a 7.5/10.

What do you think and what’s your rating of the film?

What do we think about Barbie? What do we think about Barbie?

Love this for you!

Loved the movie, loved all the jokes about the challenges of being a woman and mother. I especially loved the speech that America Ferrara's character gave. The things I loved about Barbie as a kid were her fashions and the fact that she went to so many places and did so many things. I was pretty sheltered, so I didn't think about European beauty ideals and body size standards until I was older. 🤦🏽‍♀️ It was good that the daughter acknowledged that dark side of Barbie messaging. One complaint of mine: if I remember correctly, I don't think there was a Black actress in a larger body as a Barbie. That would've been nice to see. Last thing: I sat next to a fashionable Black woman in the theater, and we had the best commentary throughout the movie. I asked her if we could keep in touch via Instagram, and now we're connected! 🩷

Yeah I really love America’s speech about the pressures women face to be perfect. Kinda brought me to tears 🥲

I would give it a 8/10. I loved that how it addressed how much we do as women. All the different roles or Barbie’s we are in one day. And how we don’t need men to make us feel whole. I remember growing up thinking Barbie was the beauty standard also. And now we know the standard is whatever we want it to be. That’s the message I took away from it. I really enjoyed the movie and I wore pink too!!!💓💓
