03 ANIMATION - FLOOR COLLISION

Here is the animation part of my second tutorial. I recorded the same tutorial in two different ways, the first 5min are for people who are in a hurry and the rest is way more detailed but slower.

So here are the files.

Please let me know how to improve for the upcoming ones. Is the resolution good now? How about the speed? Also if you post work on Instagram, tag me and I will repost you :-)

03 ANIMATION - FLOOR COLLISION

Comments

I have a starter scene. (This comes in another tutorial, just keep watching 😉)

Vincent Schwenk

Hi, do you use a starter scene to get up and running quickly or build each project from scratch?

Dean

Very nice!

andrea malpede

So strange😀

Vincent Schwenk

When I baked the plane and cylinder seperately first, the alembic finally worked! :)

Oscar Cravalli

Okey now I detected something odd - if I just let the timeline play, everytime it resets at frame 0 it gives me a different animation. But if I pause it and reset it manually, then it plays the same everytime. Maybe that could be the problem with the baking? That it bakes "the next" version? Could there be a setting with the timeline or something like that that could be off?

Oscar Cravalli

Thanks for the quick reply! No I didn't, that might be the problem! I'll give it a try :)

Oscar Cravalli

Yeah, sounds super strange. Did you try to bake (in the dynamics) first?

Vincent Schwenk

Hey Vincent! Thanks for the excellent tutorial! I had some problems with baking to alembic. When I was happy with the animation I make sure both the plane and cylinder are selected before right clicking and baking as alembic, but when I check the result it's not the same as the original animation was. It's like it's giving me another "seed" if that makes sense. I've tried to export it out and import back again in the old fashioned way but still the same problem. It's super wierd and I can't find an answer in any forums so I thought you might have some insight :) Cheers!

Oscar Cravalli

Hi VIncent, thanks for your tutorials, are very impresive!

Blas Oliet López

My Bevel deformer is not working. I've set it up exactly like you did (watched many times), same with the two Tubes sliced, sized and placed in the alembic REF.

MoGiraffe

Cool thanks. Just to make sure, I should select and bake the cylinder that we already baked once, and re-named REF, yes?

MoGiraffe

You can only bake objects/geometry, so yes.👍

Vincent Schwenk

Thanks. I just got my collision deformer set how i like it, selected it, went to bake as alembic, and nothing happened. there was no count down, and it didn't end up with the 'bake as alembic icon'. Do i need to select the cylinder as well, like the first time?

MoGiraffe

Hey Kelly, You have to bake everything what moves or deformes as an alembic without subdivisions. You can add them alter to the alembics. Cheers

Vincent Schwenk

Hi Vincent. I don’t have redshift, so I am doing this the tricky way. I have my cylinder and plane, which I baked as alembic, and I have the collision deformer on it, but I have to use a subdivision surface, which slows everything way down. At this point in the tutorial you say that you would have to cache the collision deformer as well. How exactly please? Do you mean a standard baked cache, or should I bake it as alembic? And should I also bake my subdivision surface? I want to continue and build on the additional parts to the cylinder, but it’s too slow now. Thank you!

MoGiraffe

Nevermind - it was just a view clipping issue. Ha. Thanks.

MoGiraffe

I tried it. No luck. I restarted cinema also. Can I send you a screenshot? I'm not sure if I'm properly explaining what I'm seeing.

MoGiraffe

Can you psr restet your alembics?

Vincent Schwenk

Hi Vincent, I'm loving this tutorial! But right after I Bake as alembic, (and put the objects I don’t need any more into a null, and disable the dynamics tags) I can only see a very small part of the scene in the view window. When I zoom in very tight on the cylinder and floor I can see it, and everything looks fine, but when I zoom out so I can see the whole cached sim, most of the scene disappears into the background. It’s strange. Like a gray blanket covering everything except for what’s right in front of the camera. Do you know what I mean? Project Scale is set to 0.1

MoGiraffe

Shift+c

Vincent Schwenk

Hi Vincent, what do you press in order to quickly search for needed command? What is the shortcut for this small search window?

Katja Burceva

✌️

Vincent Schwenk

Increasing the rotational mass for the cylinder by a good chunk in the dynamics tag has a fair impact on preventing it from tipping over. At least that "hack" fixed it for me without mocking around too much.

Oliver K

Good to know

Vincent Schwenk

I think its an issue with r18... opened with r21 (trial) and no problem. 👍

Cary Hudson

Yeah the bevel deformer is really not the best. One frame can be perfect, but if you render the whole animation it can start to explode. You can try to bake the bevel into tbe alembic, that sometimes helps.

Vincent Schwenk

Awesome again man! So much great stuff in here. Although I had the same trouble when applying bevel deformer as my last... polygons went missing. Any ideas? Running r18.

Cary Hudson

Thanks Erick, I am trying to produce more advanced tutorials, that's why I am rushing through. But good you say that, I thought I was still too slow. Because I usually watch tutorials in 2x speed. But I made a vimeo upgrade, so you can also slow down the video, if it is too fast for you. Cheers Vincent

Vincent Schwenk

Hey Vincent, great tutorial, just one comment could slow you down a bit. This is hardly enough to keep up. Thanks and keep up the great work. :)

Teacher Origin - 原始祖

Hey Anastasia, I still record in 2k, so everything is quite small. I could scale it to FullHD. But if you don't watch in full screen, I guess it is too small 😬. I will make some tests for the next one. Thanks

Vincent Schwenk

Thanks Vincent for the cool tutorial, I learned a lot! Just one small thing: can you please drag the timeline below the viewport in future tutorials, so that it saves some precious space :) And make the size bigger, so that the text in object manager and everywhere is a bit more readable, for those who are not watching in full screen. Thank youu

Anastasia

Thanks Justin☺️

Vincent Schwenk

Thanks Tim

Vincent Schwenk

Thanks man learned some stuff here :)

GT

Great tutorial! this is totally not how I expected you'd achieve this effect! mind blown :O
