It wasn't really explained in the film, but Harry survival is tied to the way in which Voldemort regained his body in The Goblet of Fire. When he was revived with Harry's blood, he effectively ended up taking Lily's blood into his veins as well, which somehow kept her protection enchantment intact. This allowed Harry to remain tethered to life, even after getting hit with a second killing curse. Before the last book was released, a lot of people were convinced that Harry was going to die for some reason; although Rowling didn't go that far, I remember being taken by the body count in the last book, especially compared to the rest of the series.
