For the first episode, at least, MAPPA has done a really good job at adapting the manga. Here, they were able to keep it moving at a brisk pace by covering 2 chapters, and they even made some additions that are arguably improvements on the source material.

2020-12-10 21:57:46 +0000 UTCNow that the entire story has been heavily recontexualized by the second half of season 3, I don't think a rousing, patriotic intro in the style of the earlier seasons would have fit as well as the new one, which focuses more on symbolically highlighting the nature of war and human cruelty.
