Felony Friday - Special Delivery

75-year old Evelyn “Evy” Udell of Boca Raton, FL excitedly ordered a new washing machine and dryer from Best Buy in August of 2019.  She scheduled an in-home delivery service for the new appliances, never knowing she would eventually open up her front door and her home, to her murderer.

Felony Friday - Special Delivery

It's horrible what happened but I don't understand why the sale reps would be sued. Best Buy? Yes. The contracted delivery company? Yes. But the sales rep shouldn't be held accountable for selling her the washer and dryer, that makes no sense. It's like a car sales rep being sued if the car was involved in a crime or an accident.

Wow! This makes me realize that I'm entirely WAY too trusting of the workers we've let into our house over the past 16 years! Between furniture deliveries, repair men, HVAC, phone and power company workers, plumbers, electricians, Goodwill donation pick-ups, etc. I have just relied upon the word of mouth recommendations and business names of our purchases and opened up my door to the men who arrive (between the hours of 6am-11:59pm, or the moment you run two miles up the street for 5minutes to the rural post office only open 4 hours a week). But if they show up in uniform, matching the description and pictures sent in the confirmation email, I open my door. And the company id picture texts/emails is only a recent security protocol implemented in the last few years! Now we're on a first name basis and holiday card list of our local hired help. But even then, I haven't ever done a background check on anyone, just a BBB search on a few. I'll definitely be asking more questions if we deal with any new business. Thank you for the insight and awesome Podcast!
