Episode 186: Joseph Tsai

On this episode of Grubstakers, we explore Joseph Tsai, owner of various sports franchises including the Brooklyn Nets, and how he got his start working for Jack Ma as a co-founder of Alibaba (we also did an episode covering Jack Ma; link provided below). Tsai grew up rich, and ventured through the Yale-to-private equity pipeline. But he decided to shake things up and work for nothing at Alibaba as their offshore finance guy -- nothing but a dream, and tens of millions of dollars worth of worth of ownership share and stock options in Alibaba. He also made some statements saying it is wrong to mention that Hong Kong protesters have human rights last year; one such statement which he shared to his personal Facebook page. Tsai spent billions to acquire the Brooklyn Nets, but he mostly ended up with a geopolitical headache of his and the NBA's own making. All that and more on this episode of Grubstakers.
